I've had a monthly subscription to The British Newspaper Archive since it was launched and it costs just under a tenner each month. I use the site frequently and regard it as good value for money. I've found a huge variety of information for my family history researches and for other subjects as well. I was especially pleased with several accounts I found that contained references to my great grandfather, John Henry Buckle (1852 - 1933). I recorded my findings about him on this blogpost some while ago and I've found even more stories about him since then.
A couple of days ago I was researching the history of a council housing estate my family moved to when I was about two years old. I wasn't having much success until I tried the British Newspaper Archive. You can read what I discovered here if you're interested in my memories of my 1950s childhood and there's still more to add to the story from further newspaper reports.
However, a few days ago I received an email from the subscription department of the British Newspaper Archive informing me that the price of the monthly subscription was to increase to £12.95 each month which seems quite a hike. Although they keep adding new digitised newspapers to their collection they never seem to be in the localities that particularly interest me. Not complaining! There's still plenty to go at in the newspapers from the areas where my ancestors lived.
There is an option to subscribe to the site on an annual basis but I haven't taken this. I know from my annual subscription to Ancestry that once you get locked in it's difficult to persuade yourself to terminate the subscription even if you haven't used the site very often.
However, the email from the BNA made a special offer of a reduced annual rate of £59.95, a twenty pounds saving on the normal annual rate. That works out at less than a fiver each month and seems an extremely good deal.
So my quandry is whether to continue with a monthly subscription at an increased rate which I can easily cancel if circumstances change and I stop using the site or to take the considerably reduced special offer annual rate. The monthly subscription increases at the beginning of August so I need to decide soon. What would you do?
