On May 29th 1909 Benjamin Magnus and Sarah Ann Starling were married at St. George in the East Registry, Stepney, East London.
Benjamin was born in 1886 and his parents were Barnett and Phoebe Magnus. They lived at 61, Planet Street, Stepney, East London. Barnett was a fruiterer and Phoebe assisted him in his business. Benjamin's first employment was as a cigar maker. By the time of his wedding he was employed as a general labourer, probably in the London Docks.
Sarah Ann was born in 1888 and her parents were Robert and Sarah Starling. Robert worked in the London Docks and the family lived at Upper Chapman Street, Stepney, East London.
Between 1910 and 1932, Benjamin and Sarah had twelve children including my husband Michael's father, Barnett.
In 1911 Benjamin and Sarah lived in one unfurnished room on the first floor at 51, Planet Street, Stepney, East London. The landlord of the property was Benjamin's uncle, Simon Magnus, who occupied the remaining three rooms with his wife, Elizabeth, and their four children. Benjamin and Sarah already had their first two children: Phoebe (1910) and Barnett (1911). Benjamin continued to be employed in the London Docks as a labourer.
Planet Street remained the family's home for many years. In 1939, Benjamin and Sarah lived with their children Barnett, Elizabeth (born 1917), Harry (born 1915), Phoebe and Raphael (born 1913) at 61 Planet Street. In 1953 Number 61 Planet Street was still home to Benjamin and Sarah and their children Harry, Benjamin Jnr (born 1920), Joseph (born 1924), Mark (born 1932) and Robert (born 1921).
Meanwhile in 1939, Michael's mum, Rose (1908 - 2006), lived at 31 Planet Street with her parents, Maurice John Arthur and Sarah Murray. Rose's best friend was Francis Magnus (1904 - 2000) the second child of Benjamin's Uncle Simon. Rose and Francis, Fanny as she was known, remained friends throughout their lives.
The houses in Planet Street disappeared under some blocks of flats so long ago that even one of the tower blocks that re-placed the houses has been demolished.
Sarah Ann died in 1966 but Benjamin lived on until he was 98 years old.
