My grandmother, Elsie Buckle, died on the 7th September 1952 aged 67 years.
Elsie was the fifth child of Joseph and Eliza Smith. She was born in 1885 in Royston, South Yorkshire. Her father was the inspector for the Royston section of the Barnsley Canal and the family lived at Bridge House adjacent to the canal.
Elsie was married to Sidney Henry Buckle, a coal miner, in 1908 at the parish church in Royston. The 1911 census records that Elsie and Sidney lived in an eight roomed house in Church Street, Royston, where Elsie was self-employed as a confectioner.
In 1921 their first child, Vernon, was born. Sadly, he died within a few weeks and it wasn't until 1924 that their second child, Norman, arrived. By then Elsie and Sidney had moved to 30, Church Hill, Royston where Elsie lived for the remainder of her life.
Sidney continued to work underground in the coal industry but in the early 1930s he was temporarily blinded and unable to work. When Elsie applied for assistance she had to undergo the Means Test and was told that before she could receive any benefits she had to sell her carpets, curtains and piano. This she refused to do and somehow managed to scrape by until Sidney recovered his sight and was able to resume employment.
Elsie had three sisters: Edith, Annie and Beattie and a brother named John. She was very close to her sisters but both Edith and Annie died before her.
Elsie was a regular church-goer all her life and after her burial service at Royston Church on 10th September 1952 the vicar, Rev. Leavey, wrote in the Parish Magazine:
"In Mrs Elsie Buckle the Church has lost a faithful friend and loyal worshipper. She bore a trying illness with great fortitude. Our sympathy goes out to Mr Buckle and the members of her family."
